The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their 1st volleyball poll this week.  New London is ranked 3rd in Class 1A, defending State Champion in 1A Holy Trinity Catholic is 12th in the 1st poll.  Ft. Madison holds down the #13 spot in the 4A poll.  Results from last night saw Pekin sweep their way thru a triangular at WMU.  They swept Winfield Mt. Union 25-11, 25-23, West Burlington fell to Pekin 25-18, 25-12.  West Burlington downed the Lady Wolves of WMU 25-23, 19-25, 15-12.  Pearl Krieger-Coble had 15 kills for the home team, Caitlin Jamison had 30 assists.

 

Mt. Pleasant High School JV football team opened their 2015 season last night at Ottumwa with a 14-6 win, both Panther scores were put up by the defense.  Tanner Ruby swiped 2 Bulldog passes and ran them back for scores.

It’s time to open the 2015 football season the Mt. Pleasant Panthers.  M.P. hosts Ottumwa tonight in non-district football, freshman game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the action live beginning at 6:30 with the pregame show.  The Shawn Striegel post game show will be at 11 p.m.  Last year Ottumwa defeated the Panthers in the season opener 42-21, Joe Hess tossed 2 touchdown passes in that game where M.P. struggled to move the ball consistently.  Ottumwa was led by Isaiah Cox with 134 yards and a TD, the 5’11” 200 pound senior is back again this year and joins some other speedsters that the Panthers will have to stop.  MPHS went on to a 3-6 season and Ottumwa went 5-5.

Local golfer Jim Becker took 3rd in the Super Senior Championship Flight of the 37th Annual Senior Amateur Golf Tournament in Ankeny.  Becker shot a 218 total score.
