Area high school cross country meets tonight:  Columbus Community at Iowa City Regina Invitational,

Area high school volleyball matches tonight:  West Burlington and Pekin at Winfield Mt. Union, Keokuk at Burlington.

New head volleyball coach at MPHS Dave Streeter, is preparing his team for their season opener.  The Panthers will leave early Saturday morning to travel to Afton East Union high School to play in a tournament.  Their 1st round opponent is Chariton in a 9:30 a.m. match.

This could be the season when Mt. Pleasant varsity football returns to being a feared opponent on the 2015 schedule.  The good news is a senior quarterback, solid stable of running backs, some experience in the offensive line and some weight training work in the off season.  The question marks are on the defensive side of the ball, Zac Ebling returns after leading the team in tackles, but allot of new faces will have to step up to stop a tough schedule of teams.  Last year the Panther “D” only had 10 take a ways for the year.  Joe Hess returns as the starting QB, he completed 59% of his passes last season going 96 of 163 with 15 td’s and 6 int’s. Running back Pat Canby is the returning rush leader, he missed much of last season with an injury, picking up 211 yds. On 41 attempts.  Jack Davis is the leading receiver returning, he caught 3 balls for 70 yards.  Canby will take over the punting chores from his brother Ben who graduated, Korte Maddy who shared the place kicking duties last year adds experience to that position. If the receivers get open Hess will hit them and the offensive line needs to open some holes so a running game can be established to take pressure off the passing game.  On defense M.P. needs to be the hit-er instead of the hit-ee to cause some turnovers.  Get those things done and the 2015 MPHS football team should have a good regular season and a strong chance to make the post season.
