Here’s the results from Saturday’s State Baseball Championship games at Principal Park in Des Moines.
The Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks and the West Sioux Falcons battled in the 1A championship match, but five runs in the fourth for the Hawks put them on top for good as they secured the title with an 8-5 win. It is the fourth state championship for St. Mary’s, adding to titles won in 1983-84-85.
The Clear Lake Lions captured their second consecutive 2A baseball championship with a dominant 8-1 victory over the Kuemper Catholic Knights. It was an all-around team effort as seven Lions reached base at least once and six had at least one RBI.
After losing in the championship game in 2015, the Harlan Cyclones earned their first 3A baseball championship since 2003 with a dominating 9-3 victory over the seventh-ranked Carlisle Wildcats coached by former Mt. Pleasant Panther Blake Heitmeier. All nine batters for Harlan tallied a hit.
The top-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks captured their first Class 4A baseball championship with a crushing 12-3 victory over the Iowa City West Trojans. It was an all-out slugfest as the teams combined for 18 hits with multi-hit games by five players.
The Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa has a huge racing program scheduled for tonight and tomorrow night. It’s the 1st annual Summerfest Late Model show. Two big nights of pedal to the metal racing that will thrill every fan in the stands, so be there both nights to see who takes home the big purse. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will be there broadcasting tonight from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tune in and get tuned up and ready to race!
Austin McBeth, a 2008 WACO graduate, has accepted an assistant coaching job for the University of Illinois-Springfield.
McBeth spent one season as the head assistant at Montreat College in North Carolina. He’s spent the past two seasons on the men’s basketball staff at Des Moines Area Community College.
The New London Masonic Lodge golf tourney scheduled for July 30th has been postponed to August 13th at the Deerwood Golf Course in New London.
Mt. Pleasant High School 9th-12th grade Football Camp will run August 3-5 from 8:00 to 11:00 am. Show up at Maple Leaf by 7:45 am.
7th and 8th Grade Football Camp is August 3-5, 1:30 to 3:00 pm.

The Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club Young Guns Golf post season banquet will be held August 1st, instead of August 2nd. The banquet begins at 6 p.m. families are asked to bring a side dish to share.
