University of Iowa golfer Nate Yankovich advanced to the match-play portion of the 2015 U.S. Amateur golf championship Tuesday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Yankovich shot a second-round 75 and was tied for 25th when the second round was suspended due to darkness Tuesday. He will easily be one of the 64 players to advance to match play today after the second round is completed. Yankovich shot 66 in Monday’s opening round.

Three Iowans in the field didn’t advance. Mike McCoy of West Des Moines shot a second-round 69 after opening with a 76. Broc Everett of West Des Moines shot a second-round 75 after starting with a 77. Conner Koberg of Cedar Rapids has to finish his second round Wednesday. He was 10 over par through 27 holes

 

The 2015 Mt. Pleasant High School “Meet the Players Night” will be held at Maple Athletic Complex on Friday, August 21st.  The schedule of events…..6:30 P.M. – Mt. Pleasant Athletic Booster Club begins serving meals    7:15 P.M. – Introductions of Cheerleaders, Players, Managers, and Coaches begins.  The MPHS Cross Country teams will be introduced, then the  9th, 10th and Varsity Football teams , followed by Volley Ball introductions.  The cheerleaders will be introduced next with football scrimmaging to follow.

 

7th grade football coach Kent Bennett will be conducting a mini camp for 7th grade football receivers and running backs this Wednesday thru Friday from 10-11 a.m. each day at Maple Leaf Field.  If you are unsure what position you will play, feel free to attend the camp.

 

Parents and community members are invited to WMU’s fall sports Meet the Players night on Thursday, August 20th.

Beginning at 6 PM, the Big Red Pride booster club will be serving a freewill donation meal. at the outdoor concession stand in the athletic complex.

Meet the players night activities begin at 6:30 PM also at the athletic complex and will feature introductions of student-athletes and coaches of fall sports and activities.

Friday, August 21, New London High School Meet the Players starts at 6 pm with the volleyball scrimmage.  The evening will also include introduction of the volleyball, cross country and football teams. The annual parking space auction will be held.   Sweatshirts, T shirts and food will be available for sale.

The start of the 2015 high school football season is coming up August 28th.  Here is a list of area  high school football games for week 1 of the season:   Ottumwa at Mount Pleasant (freshman play at 5 p.m., JV play 8/27)  Columbus Community at Waco, WMU at Marengo Iowa Valley, New London at Wapello,  Danville at Highland, Fort Madison at West Burlington/Notre Dame,
Keokuk at Central Lee, Pella at Washington, Davis County at Fairfield, Lynnville-Sully at Van Buren, Mediapolis at Camanche.  Harmony at Cedar Valley Christian in 8 man football.
