The Denny White Relays for boys hosted by the MPHS boys track team last night lived up to it’s expectations with tight team races and very tight individual competitions. West Burlington-Notre Dame won the Class “A” division with 187 points, MPHS was 2nd with 176.5. Pekin won the Class “B” with 141, Lone Tree had 88.5 for 2nd. Ben Canby won the discus 164’ 1”, Logan Murrary won the 3200 in 10:05.92 and the 1600 in 4;37.78. Cole Phillips won the 110 high hurdles in 14.16. The 4×800 relay was won by the Panthers in 8:50.51 with Kyle Vanderham, Jack Davis, Clayle Franklin and Henry Pham. The Shuttle hurdle relay ran 57.89 with Spencer White, Jake Lowe, Brock Wilson and Cole Phillips.
Mt. Pleasant High School girls track team won the 42nd annual Tigerette Relays at Tipton last night with 107 points, Mt. Vernon and Northeast Goose Lake tied for 2nd with 84 points. Mary Wester won the shot put 43’ 2 ½ “, discus 126’. M.P. won the 4×100 relay in 51.49 with Katie Ensminger, Hannah Becker, Kelsi Phipps and Danielle Coffin. The 4×200 relay won in 1:51.12 with Brianna Shelman, Mikayla Lance, Katie Ensminger and Danielle Coffin. In the shuttle hurdle relay M.P. won in a time of 1:05.69 with Sidney Taylor, Allison Buckert, Hannah Becker and Kelsi Phipps.
The MPHS boys golf team beat Ft. Madison 162-180. Beau Parkevich of MPHS and Jordon Hubbs of FMHS shared medalist honors with 39’s. Trevor Mabeus shot 40, William Kinney 41, Jeff Cox 42, Jordon Phomsouvandara 43, Riley Kempker 50.
Mt Pleasant girls tennis team fell to Fairfield by a score of 8-1 in Southeast Conference tennis action Thursday and that drops the Panther varsity record to 0-4. The only M.P. win came in the #2 doubles match with Aline Thiengmany and Emily Larson picking up the victory.
Fairfield defeated the Mt. Pleasant boys in tennis 5-4. Blake Wickham won in #2 singles, Jared Batty also picked up a win. Austin Meyer and Blake Wickham won in #1 doubles and Ben Zihlman and Sterling Wickham won in #2 doubles.
Iowa Wesleyan dropped the first game of a softball double header with Eureka College by a score of 6-5, Tigers drew the split with a 3-2 victory in game two.
Iowa Wesleyan will return to action Saturday at 1pm at the Maple Leaf complex. The Tigers will host Greenville College for a double-header, and will also be celebrating their seniors at the games.
The Iowa Wesleyan Tiger baseball team fell to Washington University 15-10 at home Thursday.
Iowa Wesleyan will be in action this weekend against Westminster College. The Tigers will host the Blue Jays for a double-header starting at 1 pm on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday at 1 pm.
On the local sports scene today: Friday: The MPHS girls golf team plays at Fairfield and the Middle School boys track teams run at Burlington. Saturday: MPHS boys tennis at Muscatine Tournament.
Once again in June the Mt. Pleasant Panther Alumni football team will play the Washington Demons. This year’s matchup will be on Evans Field June 13th at 7 p.m. Former MPHS football players who are interested in playing in the game should go to www.alumnifootballusa.com and signup also visit the MP Alumni facebook page. Bob Jensen will be coaching, proceeds from the event will go to Iowa City Childrens Hospital.
The Iowa Wesleyan College Tiger Club will host a golf tournament on June 12, 2015 at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. The tournament will be organized by the athletic department, and the event will benefit Tiger student-athletes. Registration for the event is now available at http://www.iwctigers.com/f/golfouting.php and can be completed online or by mailing in the registration form. There is limit of thirty-six teams for the tournament. Contests will be held at several different holes throughout the course and will include hole in one, longest drive, longest putt, and closest to the pin. A cocktail reception will take place after the completion of play, and raffle drawings will be held at that time. Iowa Wesleyan would like to thank the sponsors for helping make this event possible. Matt Lafrenz , a Country Financial agent, and Two Rivers Bank and Trust will be recognized as the title sponsor for the event. Country Financial is also the sponsor for the hole in one contest.
Iowa Wesleyan College is excited to announce that Shottenkirk of Mount Pleasant will be sponsoring the Athletic Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony. This event is being held to honor the student athletes that participated and excelled in the classroom and in their field of play at Iowa Wesleyan. It is also an opportunity to recognize the Hall of Fame inductees and their accomplishments during their time at the college. The banquet is scheduled for May 1, 2015. A reception will be held from 6:30-7:00 p.m. with the ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. The honorees for 2015 will be Bernita Rohlfing class of ’53, Kenneth Sutton ’58, Marcus Washington ’92 and Floyd Turner class of 2008. After the ceremony, the Hall of Fame reception will be held in the Social Hall. Reservations for the event can be made by contacting the Alumni Office at 319-385-6215 by April 15, 2015.
On Sunday May 3rd the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club will host the Darrel Brown Memorial 3 man best shot tournament for members and non-members. Tee off is at 10 a.m. the cost is $60 per team. Sunday May 17th is the women’s opening day best shot tournament with a 10 a.m. tee off. Memorial Day Monday May 25th there is a men’s 3 man best shot tournament for members and non-members at 8 a.m. for $60 per team. A 4 couple alternating best shot tournament will be held at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $80 per team for members and non-members.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the teams that will be competing in the state qualifying meet at Mt. Pleasant on May 14th………Clear Creek Amana, Davenport Assumption, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Solon, and Washington.
As part of its officials recruiting and education program, the Iowa High School Athletic Association will be hosting FREE baseball umpire clinics around the state in April. The clinic for S.E Iowa will be held at
Iowa City, West High School Wednesday, April 29, 2015 .
Equipment needed for the clinics is: an umpire mask and umpire cap. Other items for new officials as well as veterans will be available for purchase at each site. The Clinic will cover positioning for calling balls and strikes, base coverage, new rules and overall baseball umpiring mechanics.
Anyone interested in getting involved in umpiring at any level is welcome free of charge. Those desiring to umpire at the high school level, must register with the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Information can be obtained at www.iahsaa.org click on officials at the top of the page, click on online registration, fill out the paper work and use a debit or credit card to pay your dues. You will receive a password for your account.
From April 27-May 5 umpires will be able to take the online open book exam, which must be passed and view the online rules meeting. Those having questions can call Roger Barr, Director of Officials at 515-432-2011.
