The MPHS girls track team won the Class “A” division of the West Burlington Relays last night by over 100 points, Panthers scored 197, Washington 85, Keokuk 84, West Burlington/Notre Dame 78, Central Lee 75 and Fairfield 56. M.P. won 11 of the events, 9 running and 2 field events. Mary Wester won the shot put 43’ 11” and discus 113’ 2”. Danielle Coffin won the 100 meters 12.87, Laura Hult on the 400 106.15, Ellie Conrad won the 1500 meters in 5:15.98, Kelsi Phipps won the 100 meter hurdles 15.38. The Panthers won 5 relays. 4×100 53.14 with Brianna Shelman, Allison Buckert, Danielle Coffin and Katie Ensminger. 4×200 1:53.14 Brianna Shelman, Mikayla Lance, Katie Ensminger and Danielle Coffin. 4×800 10:34.83 Ellie Conrad, Taylor Murray, Laura Hult and Natalie Ita. Sprint Medley 1:58.29 Brianna Shelman, Allison Buckert, Danielle Coffin and Kelsi Phipps. Shuttle Hurdle 1:07.51 Sidney Taylor, Allison Buckert, Hannah Becker and Kelsi Phipps.

Danville won the Class “B” division with 169 points, Mediapolis was 2nd at 160, WMU was 3rd 65, New London 4th 54, Harmony tie for 5th 22 and West Central, Illinois 22 .

In one season, and after helping Kirkwood Community College Men’s Basketball team to a 25-7 record; sophomore guard and former Mt. Pleasant Panther Jordan Ashton was selected to the JUCO D2 National 1st Team All-American Team.  He is the 4th player in Kirkwood’s history to be chosen as a 1st Team All-American.  He finished the season scoring 526 pts….16.4 pts/gm, 16th in the nation in made 3- point field goals (82), and 3rd in the nation at freethrow percentage (88%). Additionally, Jordan was chosen to the 1st Team All-Region and he was 1st Team Academic All-American (both semesters).  You have to have above a 3.5 gpa to be chosen to 1st Team Academic All-American.  Jordan currently has 9 D2 scholarship offers and several D1 schools that are interested in him for next year. 

The Iowa Wesleyan men’s golf team played in the Gorlock Spring Invite on Sunday, March 29th and Monday, March 30th. The Tigers participated with eighteen other teams in the tournament.

Tigers shot an overall 655, giving them a thirteenth place finish. Trent Hoekstra had the low score for Iowa Wesleyan he finished tied for 22nd place individually.

The Wesleyan men’s golf team will return to action Monday, April 6th when they will host the IWC Tiger Classic. The tournament will be held at Schaeffer Golf Course in Fort Madison, IA.

 

Outdoor spring sports:   Tomorrow the MPHS girls and boys track teams will host a coed meet beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Maple Leaf Track. In the girls division joining MPHS will be Davenport Assumption, Burlington, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Des Moines Lincoln, Eddyville Blakesburg, Fairfield, Ft. Madison, Mid Prairie, Ottumwa and West Burlington.                                                                                                                                               Boys teams competing with MPHS are: Assumption Davenport, Central Lee, Fairfield, Ft. Madison , Iowa City, Mediapolis, Mid Prairie, Ottumwa, Washington, West Burlington and Davenport North. The MPHS girls tennis team goes to Burlington Notre Dame and the boys tennis team hosts Davis County at East Lake Park at 4:30 p.m.

 

The Rec Center of Mt. Pleasant is getting ready to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The observance will take place April 5th thru the 9th with many special events for members and general public. On Monday April 6th it’s flick and float, watch a movie while floating in the pool from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday April 7th there is a dodgeball tournament, Wednesday April 8th Zumba fitness at 6 p.m. Thursday April 9th youth fitness bootcamps will be held with former Iowa Hawkeye and NFL football standout Tim Dwight. K thru 5 class 3:45 to 4:15 and the 6th thru 12th grade 4:30-5 p.m. Stop in at the Rec Center or go to mpreccenter.com for more details about these events. Thursday night April 9th is Dwight Night from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club. This will be the Rec Center’s Annual Support Campaign event. Admission is $10 per person or $20 for a family. Stop out and meet Tim Dwight who had a very successful football career at all levels and now has the Tim Dwight Foundation that provides youth summer football camps with proceeds aiding the Children’s Hospital of Iowa and a scholarship fund. There will be refreshments a live auction and lots more fun during the Dwight Night.

 

The 3rd Annual Mt. Pleasant Easter Weekend 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday April 4th, 2015, at Cottrell Gym.  3rd-12th grade girls and boy’s, open men and women divisions, and 35 and older men and women divisions are available.  Cost is $60 per team, maximum of 4 players on each team, medals will be awarded for the 1st and 2nd places in each division.  To register and for more information contact Ronnie Ashton at 319-931-2896.
