District wrestling action takes center stage today around the state of Iowa.  The top two place winners from each weight class in the 1A, 2A and 3A Districts will advance onto the State Individual Tournament Thursday thru Saturday in Des Moines.  Mt. Pleasant is playing host to the 3A District in this area, wrestling begins in Panther Gym at noon.  Schools on had to compete alongside the Panthers are:  Burlington, Ft. Madison, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa and Pella.

The 1A District at Wilton will have these KILJ area wrestlers competing:  for New London will be 132 pounder Samueal Loyd, Javis Krieger at 138 pounds  and  Jaxon Allen  at 220 pounds all as sectional champions, Cameron Raines advances as a runner up at 195 pounds..  Waco sends Cody Crawford at 285 as a champion. Mediapolis  sends Reese Thornburg runner up at 132 pounds, Caden Benz runner up at 145, Hunter Aney runner up at 152, and champion Brennan Swafford at 160 pounds.

The 2A District is being held at Fairfield.  Columbus Community/WMU has #1 ranked Jarod Kadel at 106 pounds as a sectional  champion, Tucker Bright as sectional runner up at 120, Cam Rice finished 1st in the sectional at 138.


Mt. Pleasant girls came from behind to defeated the Washington Demons during senior night by a score of 44-38.  Panthers led 17-11 at halftime and then fell behind going into the 4th quarter 25-24 as the Demons put on a strong charge to start the 2nd half.  Then M.P. wrestled the lead away from the visitors and shot free throws well down the stretch and picked up their 11th win against 9 losses and finish 5-3 in the conference with one game to play Monday night when they go to Ottumwa.  Maddie Williamson led the Mt. Pleasant scoring with 17 points which is ironic as she turns 17 years old today.  The Senior players honored in pre-game ceremonies were:  Taylor Murray and Kalynn Batey.

JV Girls lost a heartbreaker in overtime against Washington 32-28. Karsyn Lamm had 8 points. Emma Huckabone had 6 points, Lexie Magnani had 2 points and led the rebounding with 6.

MP Fresh/Soph lost 29-27.  Serenity Keomanivong led all scorers with 14.  Emma Rugg had 7,Alyssa Streigal had 9 rebounds.

The #1 ranked Mt. Pleasant Panther boys’ basketball team did not look like the best Class 3A team in the 1st half at Washington Friday night as they led by only 29-21 after two quarters and trailed a couple of times.  Then in the 2nd half the Panthers defense shut down the Demons allowing onlt 9 points and that lit the offense up to score 40 points in 16 minutes of play, then they looked like a #1 team.  Brady Sartorius led MPHS with 31 points and Jordon Magnani added 10 which put him over the 1,000 point mark for his high school career.  Mt. Pleasant is now 16-3 overall and finished the Southeast Conference schedule undefeated at 8-0.  MPHS hosts Ottumwa Monday.

The M.P. JV won 56-51, Keegan Kohorst scored 17 and Sam Beatty added 12.

Mt. Pleasant won the freshman game 54-31, Brevin Wilson scored 19.

CLASS 3A REGIONAL GAMES TONIGHT:  Davis County at Central Lee, West Liberty at Camanche, Tipton at Mid Prairie, Northeast Goose Lake at Assumption


The MPHS girls and boys bowling teams are competing in the S.E. Conference Bowling Tournament at the Flamingo Lanes in Fairfield with action beginning at 1 pm.


The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team will be back on the road today. They will take on Fontbonne University at 1 pm today.  The Tigers are now 4-17 overall and 4-9 in SLIAC play this season.

The Iowa Wesleyan men’s basketball team who is  5-17 overall and 5-10 in SLIAC will return to action today. The Tigers will travel to St. Louis to take on Fontbonne University at 3 pm.
