SCC to Host 2015 Southeast Iowa Regional STEMFest, April 25Written by Theresa Rose on April 9, 2015
West Burlington, IA- Southeastern Community College (SCC) will be hosting the Southeast Iowa Regional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Festival (STEMFest) at its West Burlington campus on April 25, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. SCC is partnering with the Southeast Iowa STEM Hub, local businesses and manufacturers and educators for the event.
STEMFest exposes kids and adults to careers and opportunities in STEM-related fields through hands-on activities led by exhibitors across the region. Participants will explore STEM careers through robotics and healthcare simulations as well as magnetism and wind energy exhibits.
With the increasing demand and current labor shortage for jobs requiring digital and technical skills, a background in STEM has become essential for an expanding variety of fields. SCC Work-Based Learning Specialist, Leanne Krogmeier, says the festival is a great way for students to discover a range of careers in Southeast Iowa’s growing industries.
“We want students to be able to go beyond what they have learned about these topics in school, and begin to explore careers in these fields. There are so many STEM careers right here in Iowa that many people don’t know about, and many more to come due to our growing reliance on technology,” says Krogmeier.
Last year, over 600 students and parents participated in STEMFest. Krogmeier hopes the trend continues this year.
“My hope for this years’ STEMFest is that we have more attendees. We already have more exhibitors signed up than we did last year at this time. Last year, there was talk amongst several of them about how they could improve for this years’ fest.”
STEMFest is free and open to the public.
