Robert W. Ekle

Robert W. Ekle, 80, of rural Farmington, Iowa passed away at 7:05 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.


Born August 17, 1935 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Walter Henry and Marie (Schmitt) Ekle. On June 6, 1956 he married Marilyn Philp at Embury United Methodist Church in rural Donnellson, Iowa.


Survivors include his wife: Marilyn of Farmington; one son: Mark (Audrey) Ekle of Farmington; one daughter-in-law: Bonnie Ekle of Farmington; seven grandchildren: Emily (Derek) Ekle, Bethany (Chris) Gray, Kate (Dan) Junk, Lewis Ekle, Jackie (Travis) Cochenour, Erin (Brandon) Guffey, Dean (Kailynn) Ekle; eight great grandchildren: Bobby & Eliza Thorn, Noah & Ellie Gray, Owen Junk, Kirra Ekle, Penny Cochenour, and Carson Ekle; two AFS sons: Guilherme Lulsdorf and Gerhardt Platzer.


He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Robby and Eric; and siblings: Walter, Leroy, Janey, and Rose.


Robert was a graduate of Keokuk High School. He was an active member of the community, including the Farmington United Methodist Church and the Farmington Actioneers. Because friends and neighbors were very important to him, Robert always made time to lend a hand. Farming was Robert’s profession, as well as his passion. He could often be seen riding his four-wheeler over his farm, a loyal dog at his side. An accomplished craftsman, Robert enjoyed woodworking, and built numerous projects over the years for his family, neighbors, and friends.

On Sunday, June 26, 2016, the family will welcome friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Farmington, Iowa. A memorial service will directly follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m., with Pastors Michael Elrod and Dawn Butler officiating. Following the memorial service, a time of fellowship will be held in the church basement.


A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Croton Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory.
