Raymond E. Roland, 86, of Fairfield died Thursday, October 1 at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. There will be a visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, October 5, at the home of Steve Winslow, 1936 216th Street, off South 32nd Street behind Access Energy near Fairfield. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, followed by a Celebration of Life at Steve Winslow’s home as well. Memorials can be made to Parkview Care Center and sent to Debi Sammons at 309 Birch Avenue, Mt. Pleasant, IA 52641.
Mr. Roland was born November 8, 1928 in Jefferson County, the son of Ralph Clayton and Ruth Lillian Kilburn Roland. He graduated from Fairfield high school in 1946. He married Doris Davis in 1948. They later divorced. He married Patricia Reece Carruthers in Keosauqua December 18, 1979. She preceded him in death February 28, 2007.
Mr. Roland spent his entire lifetime in the Fairfield, Libertyville and Brighton areas. He was in the National Guard and later in the Navy, and served in the Jefferson County Posse. He did carpentry work, maintenance at Parsons College and was a feed salesman. He loved horses, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with his family and friends. He was in the Brighton Saddle Club and later in the Lockridge Rough Riders club.
Survivors include one son, Ron Roland of Fairfield, one daughter, Debi (Steve) Sammons of Mt. Pleasant, two granddaughters, Amy Johnson and Megan Chappell, two grandsons, Michael and Juston Sammons, great-grandson Cooper Johnson and great-granddaughter Shawna Sammons, one sister, Linda Burger of Fairfield, nephew Steve Winslow, and special friend Dixie Ruggles of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents, brother-in-law Dewayne Burger and niece, Cindy Winslow.
