O. Leon “Bud” Shelman

O. Leon “Bud” Shelman, age 80 of Mediapolis, died Wednesday October 12, 2016 at his home in Mediapolis. The son of Gordon and Lillian (Kephart) Shelman, he was born December 3, 1935 at Hillsboro, Iowa. On June 5, 1956 he married Martha Lindsey at Fort Benning, Georgia.  He was a graduate of the Washington High School, Washington, Iowa and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.  He worked at H and L Mack as service manager and driver for over 30 years.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis, the American Legion and was a former member of the Mediapolis Fire Department.  He served in the US Army from 1954-56.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include:  his wife Martha of Mediapolis; two sons, Lindsey and Debbie Shelman and Bruce and Debbie Shelman all of Mediapolis; one daughter Teresa and Bill Fletcher of Muscatine; Nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; one brother Joe Shelman of Washington and one sister Ann Sheetz of Keota.  He was preceded in death by his parents.


The funeral service will be Saturday October 15, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis, with Rev. Bruce Smith and Rev. Dean Graber officiating.  Interment will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery with graveside military rites.  Friends may call on Friday from 3-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m.  Memorials have been established in his name for the First United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.
