Nancy Jeanne (Brown) Ratkowski, 72, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2015 at The Madison in Fort Madison, Iowa. She had been in failing health for several months.
Born November 25, 1942 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Lloyd and Mary “Peggy” (Lampe) Brown. On October 23, 1976 she married Bob Ratkowski and moved to Park Falls, Wisconsin. They later divorced but remained good friends throughout their lives. After Nancy and Bob divorced she moved back to West Point, Iowa.
Survivors include her two sisters, Joanne Beach of West Point, Iowa and Sue (Tom) Newton of Iowa City, Iowa, she is also survived by two nieces, Mary Lou (Jeff) Birdsell of Montrose, Iowa and Laura (Adam) Kahler of Iowa City, Iowa; one nephew, Jim Bechtel of West Point, Iowa; several great nieces, nephews, cousins and one uncle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather and brother-in-law.
Nancy graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic Schools and Southeastern Community College. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa. She worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as a receptionist for several years and also worked as an assistant in the physical therapy department at the Fort Madison Community Hospital. One of her favorite memories was meeting Elizabeth Taylor when she was recuperating from surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Nancy’s hobbies included working crossword puzzles, jumbles and reading. Some of her favorite activities were shopping with her niece, Laura and picnicking and fishing with her niece, Mary Lou, and her nephew, Jim. She enjoyed the outdoors and being on her computer.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Ossenbrinck Center next to St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa with Father Dennis Hoffman officiating.
Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in West Point, Iowa.
A memorial has been established in her memory to the West Point Library.
