The Police Dog 1 trials were held in Marshalltown, IA July 18 and 19th.   United States Police Canine Association PD1 Trials consist of several individually scored events including; Obedience, Evidence Location and Recovery, Suspect Search and Apprehension. During each event both the K-9 and the handler are judged and scored.

The Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility K9 team of Stg Butch Wellington and his dog Cash placed 1st in the agility test and had a perfect score in the evidence/article search. This was Cash’s first certification and he surpasses his handler’s expectations.

The agility course is made up of five obstacles. The canine, at the command of its handler, is judged on its ability to surmount these obstacles, starting anywhere from within 15 feet in front of the obstacle. For the evidence/article search within 3 minutes the canine must locate and retrieve 2 items of evidence thrown into a 30 foot square area of grass approximately 12 inches high.

A total of 26 K-9’s from other Iowa and Minnesota Law Enforcement agencies participated in the certification trials.
