Mayne Courter

 Mayne Courter, age 98 of Winfield, died Thursday August 18, 2016 at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.  The son of Oscar and Harriet (Elder) Courter, Thomas Mayne Courter was born December 31, 1917 in Winfield, On April 14, 1946 he married Helen Blair in Ottumwa; she preceded him in death December 14, 2015. He graduated from Winfield High School and the University of Iowa. While at the University, he sang with the Quadrangle Choir at half time for an Iowa football game.  He was a self employed carpenter. He was a lifelong member of the Winfield First Presbyterian Church, where he was very active.  He served as an elder and deacon and sang in the church choir for 75 years.  He also did a lot of soloist work over the years.  He was a former member of the Lions club, school board, and A.F.S.  He enjoyed camping, singing, and traveling, which took the couple to Europe, Morocco, China, Thailand, and Singapore.

Survivors include:  two sons, David Courter of Shelby Township, Michigan and Donald Courter of Lebanon, PA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers.

Mr. Courter has donated his body to the University of Iowa Deed Body Program.


A memorial service will be held Saturday August 27, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield.  The family will meet with friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.  Burial will be at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church.  Honts Funeral Home in Winfield is in charge of the arrangements.
