Mary O. Williams, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

A funeral service for Mary Williams will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, June 30 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Deborah J. Stowers, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-8 PM on Wednesday evening. A memorial service for Mary will also be held in her hometown of Danvers, MA at a later date.

Mrs. Williams, the former Mary Olive Prentiss, was born September 19, 1938 in Danvers, MA. She was the daughter of Raymond Francis and Phyllis Helena (Moser) Prentiss. She graduated as the Salutatorian of the Holden High School in Danvers in 1956. On April 9, 1961 at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Danvers, MA, Mary was united in marriage to Merlyn Denver Williams.

The couple made their home in Nashua, NH in 1962 where Mary was a bookkeeper for a company there. In 1964, they moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. For over 30 years, Mary was a cook in the Mt. Pleasant Community School District. She spent the majority of her years serving lunch at the Junior High/Middle School, where she enjoyed interacting with many children over the years. She retired in 2003, but continued to substitute in the school kitchen when called. She also worked as a cook for the former Buff’s Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant.

Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active with the United Methodist Women in Mt. Pleasant where she was a member of the Patience Circle. Mary was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 25 years. It was a huge part of her life and she lived her life one day at a time. She enjoyed being a sponsor and helping others in the program. She also served as President of the Happy Times Club, a neighborhood women’s group in Mt. Pleasant. In her spare time, Mary loved spending time outside, reading, being active but above all, she loved her family. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother and an exceptional Nana to her four grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing in Mary’s life include her husband of 55 years, Merlyn of Mt. Pleasant; 2 sons and their wives – David & Jane Williams of Mt. Pleasant and Robert & Kristin Williams of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter and her husband – Sara & Ben Hope of Columbia, MO; 2 brothers – Donnie Prentiss & his wife Donna of Danvers, MA and Billy Prentiss & his special friend Nancy Peskowski of Northwood, NH; a sister – Susie Mouhtouris of Danvers; 2 brothers-in-law – Tom Waite of Danvers and Bruce Philpott of Philadelphia, PA; a former sister-in-law, Susan Prentiss of Danvers, MA and 4 grandchildren – Ethan Sabers, Aidan Williams, Hannah Bailey and Lola Hope.

Her parents and 2 sisters – Polly Waite and Rae Philpott precede Mary in death.
