Local Photographers and Painters Featured in Upcoming Fundraiser

Salem, Iowa – Saturday August 29th, 2015 – Volunteers are focusing on new a fundraising event for the Salem Crew Public Library’s annual Silent Auction during Old Settlers.

The goal is for a portion of the raised funds be used to upgrade the Genealogy section of the library by highlighting the talent of local photographers and painters in Southeast Iowa. This event will be held in the activity room at the Salem Crew Public Library from 11:00 am until 4:30 pm.

Sheila Carr, Genealogy Committee Chairperson says, “I want to make this one of the best Genealogy resources available in Southeast Iowa. Established in 1835, Salem has a rich history that we want to preserve. We are in the process of installing a dedicated genealogy laptop computer and docking station but we need other equipment like scanners and filing equipment.”

Photography categories include: People, Nature, Buildings, Farm Life, Black & White and This & That. Paintings will be placed in a separate Open Class. Artists under the age of 18 can submit entries of photography and paintings for a separate Young Artist category. Entry forms are available at the Salem Crew Public Library or by contacting Cheryl Sanders at mommasanders56@gmail.com. Deadline to submit entry forms and artwork is Friday, August 1, 2015.

Cheryl Sanders, who is leading the event: “We have discovered there are many very talented artist and photographers in our area. We appreciate their generosity in allowing us to share their art work with the public and providing an opportunity for us to present a new and exciting avenue to raise money for a worthy cause.”

The donated artwork will be sold using the silent auction and fixed price formats. Also, a special “Sotheby’s style” live auction will be held at 3:30 pm to auction off selected art pieces.

In addition to the art exhibit, there will be a silent auction for baked goods and large items. The library is accepting donations such as antiques and furniture that will be displayed outside and can be bid on throughout the day.
