Larry Buffington

Larry L. Buffington, age 75 of Winfield, died Saturday January 10, 2015 at Sunrise Terrace Care Center. The son of Layton and Bernadine (Chamberlin) Buffington, he was born June 9, 1939 at Columbus Junction. On June 3, 1962 he married Norma Evans in Winfield. He was a graduate of the Winfield High School, class of 1958. He served in the US Army during the Cuban Crisis. He was a mechanic and owned and operated the Winfield Service Center until his retirement. Following retirement he did work at local implement dealerships. He was a loyal volunteer on the Winfield Fire Dept. beginning in 1966. One of his favorite hobbies was to build a ¼ scale model of a little red fire truck with parts from all over the United States. He was often seen displaying his fully operable fire truck in local parades. Another favorite was building and pulling his garden tractor “Thunder Child” as he called it! Other past times included watching car races and visiting with friends.

Survivors include: his wife Norma of Winfield; one daughter, Shelley Takahashi and one grandson Wesley Takahashi both of Rogers, Arkansas; one sister, Diane of Story City; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rick and Robert.

Cremation has been accorded and there will be a memorial service and interment in the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials have been established for the Winfield First Presbyterian Church, the Winfield Fire Dept. and the Winfield First Responders.

Honts Funeral Home in Winfield is assisting the family with arrangements.
