Karen K. Salter, 75, of Keosauqua died at 11:08 A.M. Saturday June 11, 2016 at home. She was born July 5, 1940 in Keosauqua to Willard and Florabelle Kerr Cox and married William J. Salter February 2, 1958 in Keosauqua. He died November 22, 2012.
Karen graduated from Keosauqua High School and Drake University in Des Moines where she earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology. She opened her own practice in Des Moines counseling those with disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. She and her husband were adoptive and foster parents for many children with special needs. In 1995 the Salters retired to Keosauqua and opened The Mansion Inn Bed and Breakfast in the historic Manning mansion which they operated until Mr. Salter’s death. They were founders of the Tarnished Brass who perform at many community functions. Karen remained active in the band until her final illness.
Surviving are four daughters, Cindy McLeran, Brenda Stifel, Lynnette Salter and Kim Bashara all of Highlands Ranch, CO, 11 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving are two sisters, Sandie Murray (George) of Keosauqua and Mary Cohenour of Fairfield and a brother, Marvin Cox of Fairfield. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her step-father, John Ford, a daughter, Lisa Wingert Salter, a sister, Naomi Patterson, four brothers, Dean, Larry Joe, Bill and Ronnie Cox and a great-granddaughter, Tabitha McLeran.
In accord with her wishes Karen’s body has been cremated. A celebration of her life will be held later this summer at the Mansion Inn. Memorials to Tarnished Brass Band or Van Buren County High School Band may be mailed to the family at 500 Henry Street, Keosauqua, IA 52565. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua is assisting the family.
