January is National Radon Action MonthWritten by Anna Greiner on January 18, 2015
It’s invisible….you can’t smell it….or taste it. And there’s a good chance that your home has high levels of it. January is National Radon Action Month. The EPA is urging Americans to test their homes. This radioactive gas is naturally occurring but is preventable. Here’s an interesting fact: radon is the second cause of lung cancer with 21,000 American dying from it annually. Iowa is a Zone One, which means that there is a high potential for radon and of the tested homes, five out of seven homes are above sasfe EPA levels. Affordable, do-it-yourself kits are available at home improvement or hardware stores and online and you can also hire professionals to test for you. If your test results are 4 pci per liter or more, you need to take action. For more information on radon and to find professionals in the field, you can go to www.epa.gov/radon or call 800-SOS-RADON.
