James Edward “Jim” Sanders

James Edward “Jim” Sanders, 76, of Houghton, Iowa passed away at 11:45 p.m., Monday, February 9, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Born October 18, 1938 in Fort Madiosn, Iowa the son of Leo and Otilda “Tillie” (Breitbarth) Sanders. On November 9, 1963 he married Betty L. Stuecker at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Houghton, one son Joseph (Heather) Sanders of Ankeny, one daughter Stacie (Lou) Baccam of Mt. Pleasant, five grandchildren: Hailie, Collin and Brett Baccam, Dylan and Olivia Sanders, three brothers Ronald Sanders of Mt. Hope, Wisconsin, Dan (Tina) Sanders of East Dubuque, Illinois and Mike (Nancy) Sanders of West Point and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim worked for Kruse Implement in Houghton, Iowa for forty four years and two more years when it changed hands to Elder Implement. He served in the National Guard and Army Reserve where he was called to active duty at Fort Lewis near Seattle, Washington during the Berlin Crisis. Jim was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton. He was a Houghton Knights of Columbus Council #3905 member and a member of the Southeastern Iowa Sportsman Society. He enjoyed hunting, teaching hunter’s safety courses and gardening.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton where the family will meet with friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. A christian wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 13, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Bruce DeRammelaere as celebrant.

Burial will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Houghton with full military rites presented by the West Point Holtz-Geers American Legion Post #668.

Memorials may be made in his memory to the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
