WASHINGTON COUNTY, Iowa – Around 1:30 PM, today, October 1, 2015, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa State Patrol (ISP) was notified of a possible suspicious vehicle involved in retail thefts in the Cedar Rapids area.
The Iowa State Patrol located the suspected vehicle driving south on I-380 near mile marker 4. A State Trooper made an attempt to stop the silver Dodge Charger, but the vehicle failed to stop and a chase ensued.
With the assistance from deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol Air Wing, the State Trooper followed the suspects’ vehicle south on Hwy. 218 to mile marker 80, the Kalona/Lone Tree exit. There, the suspects’ vehicle pulled into a local gas station. The suspects failed to comply with commands given by the Trooper. The suspects’ vehicle then hit a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy’s squad car; subsequently, one shot was fired by the Trooper. No injuries were sustained from the shooting.
Three individuals were taken into custody at the scene, two are currently being held at the Washington County Jail and one has been transported to the Linn County Jail.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating the shooting incident, along with the Iowa State Patrol.
Several agencies assisted with this shooting incident and investigation including the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol Air Wing, Cedar Rapids Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Attorney’s Office and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Trooper remains on duty and the name of the Trooper, the suspects and any further information will not be released until all individuals involved in the incident have been interviewed.
