Huisenga appointed to Mt. Pleasant School Board

The Mt. Pleasant School Board voted to appoint Melinda Huisenga to finish out the term of the District 2 Director seat, replacing Regina Erikson who retired after the last regular board meeting. The seat is up for re-election in 2017. Todd Batey had originally thrown his hat into the ring for the position but withdrew his name. Batey said after listening to Huisenga’s interview he felt good about his decision. He read a prepared statement that basically said at first he thought he could make a valuable contribution as a board member but considering all that has gone on in the past two hears, he believed it was in the best interest of the district to pull his name. He said the community needs to heal and divisions and barriers need to be removed so the district can move ahead. Batey was a vocal member of the Save Our School organization raising concerns during the tenure of the previous superintendent. Huisenga is a Mt. Pleasant native who moved back to Mt. Pleasant from Carlisle, Iowa with her husband Alan. She served 12 years on that district’s school board and was involved in the selection of two superintendents during that time. She was also involved in many other civic organizations and continues that active involvement in the Mt. Pleasant community.
