Henry County Receives Recognition as 35th Home Base Iowa CommunityWritten by Theresa Rose on May 12, 2016
MOUNT PLEASANT— The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce and Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission announced on Wednesday, May 11, at the Henry County Courthouse that Henry County is the 35th Home Base Iowa Community in the State of Iowa.
Keynote speaker, Iowa Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, spoke about how the Home Base Iowa program provides benefits to our military veterans and service members and also helps provide skilled labor and economic development in our local communities.
The Home Base Iowa program is an initiative put forward by Governor Terry Branstad and Major General Tim Orr, the Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, as a means of recruiting veterans to work in Iowa after their time in the service. Lieutenant Governor Reynolds highlighted the importance of this program to businesses across the state, “Veterans have the skills our companies need such as teamwork, dedication, a strong work ethic and problem-solving abilities and have been tested in some of the toughest situations imaginable. Statistics show over 200,000 service members exit the military every year.”
“Earning the Home Base Iowa designation for Henry County helps demonstrate our community’s gratitude for the sacrifice and service of our military and their families,” said Travis Kraus, Executive Vice President of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance. “We hope to see transitioning service members take advantage of our Home Base Iowa benefits as they explore local career opportunities and move to Henry County.”
Henry County is taking part in this initiative through local employers that have made the pledges to hire veterans, as well as through a significant incentives package offered to veterans that take jobs and relocate to Henry County. Local incentives, put together by the Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission and Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, include gas and hotel vouchers that will enable transitioning military members to visit Henry County for job interviews. Several banks in the area have offered a $300 reduction in closing costs and Iowa Wesleyan University and the Mount Pleasant Community School District will provide free event passes for veterans.
