Henry County Heritage Trust Board Sept. MeetingWritten by Theresa Rose on September 28, 2015
The Henry County Heritage Trust board met Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at the Heritage Center [old Saunders School building] for their regular monthly meeting. In attendance: Ken Vandevoort, president; Terry McNair, vice president; Waunita Gibbons, secretary; Pat White, treasurer; Sheila Allender; Lea Bradley; John Harnagel and David McCoid. The meeting was held in the Donald E. Young Memorial Room.
Status reports were given on the buildings – Saunders School and the Van Allen House – and the following topics were discussed:
Egli Landscapes has provided a design for landscaping around the Van Allen House. Planting trees on the north side and shrubs on the south side will be completed this fall. Generous pledges have been received to fund these first two phases.
Karen O’Connor of Davenport has been retained as a consultant to oversee the organization and preservation of the Donald Young Collection. Karen visited for the first time September 19th. Funding for her services is provided by a grant through the Iowa State Historical Society and the Department of Cultural Affairs and covers a period of 30 months.
The garage sale, hosted by Marilyn Carden-Crill over Old Threshers, was a success and netted over $800.
Mt. Pleasant High School Class of 1965 recently held their 50th reunion and several stopped in to tour the museum. The 1950s model of the town square continues to be a highlight. Classes from 1955 and 1970 have also scheduled tours.
Memorabilia from Baxter Hatchery, Fankhauser’s Dairy and Van’s Lunch Box were recently received donations and will be on display in the museum’s advertising showcase.
Slide show presentations of historic Mt. Pleasant places and memorabilia are popular with the residents at Sunnybrook and the public is encouraged to attend these monthly sessions.
Pat White and Ken Vandevoort will attend the Iowa Museum Association Conference in Pella, which runs October 4-6.
The next meeting of the HCHT board is October 20th at 6:30 p.m., Donald E. Young Memorial Room at the Heritage Center [old Saunders School building], 203 N. White Street. The public is welcome.
