Henry County Heritage Trust Board Meeting

The Henry County Heritage Trust board met Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the Heritage Center [old Saunders School building] for their regular monthly meeting in the Donald E. Young Memorial Room. In attendance: Ken Vandevoort, president; Terry McNair, vice president; Waunita Gibbons, secretary; Pat White, treasurer; Lea Bradley; John Harnagel and Lynn Conrad. Larry Brenizer attended as a guest.

Status reports were given on the buildings – Saunders School and the Van Allen House. The following topics were discussed:

Pat White and Ken Vandevoort reported on their attendance at the Iowa Museum Association Conference in Pella. Contact was made with several vendors and library shelving from OSDI of Amana will be installed In the Donald Young Room within a week.

Egli Landscapes will be landscaping around the south side of the Van Allen House within the next two weeks. Also, the location for two trees on the north side has been marked. Generous pledges have been received to fund these two phases. Larry Brenizer reported that Evening Rotary would like to donate and dedicate an additional tree to Martha Hayes. It will be planted in the spring.

Karen O’Connor of Davenport, retained as a consultant to oversee the organization and preservation of the Donald Young Collection, visited on October 12th. It was an extremely productive day, as the collection of yearbooks [to include Targets, Croakers and other county annuals] were inventoried. In addition, city directories, phone books and plat maps were organized and catalogued. Karen will be coming again on November 11th.

Mt. Pleasant High School Classes of 1955 and 1970 visited within the month to tour the museum. Residents of Sunnybrook Assisted Living are scheduled to visit in the near future.

Temple Theater and Jericho’s Drug Store memorabilia, plus books authored by Ethel Hueston were received as donations and will be on display in the museum. The book, “K.A. Bergdahl – Mt. Pleasant Builder” was a special acquisition, donated by his granddaughter.

The next meeting of the HCHT board is November 17th, at 6:30 p.m., Donald E. Young Memorial Room at the Heritage Center [old Saunders School building], 203 N. White Street. The public is welcome to attend.
