Heaton Releases Statement on Governor Vetoes

(DES MOINES) – Rep. Dave Heaton (R-Mount Pleasant), chairman of the Health
and Human Services budget committee, released the following statement in
response to the governor’s veto of funding to keep the Mount Pleasant Mental
Health Institute operating:

“As a lifelong Mount Pleasant resident, I know the positive impact the MHI
and its employees have had on our community. As a legislator, I have fought
to maintain the services in Mount Pleasant because of the superb care they
offer.

“I am terribly disappointed that the governor chose this course of action.
Shutting down the MHI reduces capacity and services for Iowans with mental
health and substance abuse issues.

“When the legislature passed the mental health redesign plan several years
ago, it was understood that additional mental health services needed to be
developed to address the care needs of Iowans. The governor’s office and
the legislature need to be working together on solutions.

“While this is certainly a blow to our community, we are strong and will
move forward in a positive way.”
