Moline, IL — On June 3, the 2015 National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Small Business of the Year was awarded to Grasshorse Studios. Based in Winfield, Iowa, the company is a Midwestern family-owned studio operated by Kathy Buxton and her brother Steve Jennings. Grasshorse Studios is a character animation studio that serves national and regional clients. They are experts at engaging, entertaining and communicating to audiences. Grasshorse is well known in the industry and has an impressive body of work, most recently a Government contract with the City of Tulsa stormwater division for whom they created three character animated PSAs using 2D and 3D hybrid animation techniques.

Grasshorse has nurtured their talented artists through fostering an affordable character animation degree at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa, and regularly offering internships in a real-studio setting. Three graduates and an animation professor from this program contributed to the creation of the aforementioned PSAs.

Through an emphasis on customer service and focusing on the right customers, Grasshorse Studios has been able to expand into the Government market. While they have been successful commercially with large scale and high profile projects, in a relatively short amount of time they have diversified into the Government market, having made amazing strides and demonstrated great results.

Grasshorse was nominated for the award based upon their perseverance, working the process and really focusing their efforts, knowing that targeted marketing and bidding is truly the way to set themselves apart and be successful. They are a great example of how Government contracting/sales can really assist companies looking to diversify, if you are willing to put in the effort.
