Fort Madison’s Huffman Welding & Machine Pledges Support to SCC’s Building the Dream CampaignWritten by Theresa Rose on September 18, 2015
West Burlington, IA – Southeastern Community College’s Building the Dream capital campaign has received another gift – this time from a long-time family-owned Fort Madison business, Huffman Welding & Machine. The company has pledged $10,000 to the campaign.
The company, established in 1971 by Robert Huffman, Sr., is led today by brothers Michael, Richard (Hank), Bob Huffman, Jr., and Michael’s son, Jason. It is a fixture in the area, providing support for many local businesses, industries and the agriculture community.
SCC President Dr. Ash explains that the Huffmans’ businesses employ a number of SCC graduates from the welding, machining, drafting and industrial maintenance programs.
“The Huffmans’ gift demonstrates the value local businesses find in SCC. It shows that community collaboration works and that a strong SCC is a strong Southeast Iowa. We’re extremely grateful for their efforts and their gift.”
The Building the Dream capital campaign is funding SCC’s construction initiative currently under way. Projects include a new Health Professions Center and the Hall of Sciences on the West Burlington campus, and the Industrial Technologies Training Center on the Keokuk campus. It is the largest, most comprehensive infrastructure investment undertaken by SCC since 1995.
Bob Huffman likens his family’s support of SCC to their support of another Southeast Iowa mainstay: the Tri-State Rodeo.
“The rodeo draws thousands of people to our community every year and it has a dramatic impact on our economy. SCC provides training to thousands of people across our region. They’re both important to the success of our community. We hope our gift inspires others to join in.”
Michael Huffman, a 1974 graduate of SCC’s Machining program is hopeful this gift will help SCC continue to provide a quality technical education for future generations. He credits his positive experience at SCC as one of the reasons his family helped retool Fort Madison High School’s welding program, which offers college credit to high school students through an agreement with SCC.
Ash adds, “Michael told me that the skills he learned at SCC helped him contribute to building his family’s successful business. Now, thanks to this gift, SCC will continue to help shape the lives of future workers, boosting their chances for success, too.”
Building the Dream Campaign Chair Mike Shinn is thrilled to see Fort Madison businesses get involved. “It’s inspiring to see business owners like the Huffmans from throughout the region come together to support Building the Dream. The College is focusing on building top-notch facilities for its programs. A strong SCC is a strong region.”
The campaign has secured funding pledges of over $7.58 million of the campaign’s $12 million goal to date.
