The Iowa State wrestling squad opened the 2008-09 season in strong fashion with a 39-0 win over Utah Valley Thursday night in Hilton Coliseum. Coach Cael Sanderson's squad is coming off of back-to-back Big 12 team championships.
ISU's wrestling squad has won 12 straight home opening duals. The Cyclones now stand at 79-12-1 all-time in season openers.
Making his 2008-09 debut, junior Chris Pursel toughed out a tight decision against Utah Valley's Bradley Darrington. Pursel broke a 4-4 tie in the third period with a takedown at the 0:27 mark and held on for the victory.
Returning two-time NCAA finalist Jake Varner started his junior campaign with a pin against Utah Valley's Adam Fager in 2:34. Varner has moved up to the 197-pound weight class after two seasons at 184 pounds.
Nick Fanthorpe, who finished seventh at last year's NCAA Championship, recorded his first technical fall of the season in 6:42 against the Wolverine's Flint Ray. Fanthorpe tallied six takedowns during the match. Returning All-American Cyler Sanderson notched his first victory of the 2008-09 campaign by recording a major decision against Wade Eldredge, 15-5. Sanderson's victory came fueled on a third-period flurry in which he notched a reversal and a two-point nearfall within the first 20 seconds of the final period.
Sophomore Tyler Clark matched up against the Wolverine's lone ranked wrestler, No. 18 Ben Kjar. Clark held a 4-2 advantage heading into the third period and that proved to be all he needed as he closed at the third fighting off Kjar's takedown attempts.
Nick Gallick, the preseason No. 2 pick in the 141-pound weight class, picked up a 5-3 win by decision against UVU's Jeff Newby. Gallick was tough on his feet and did not give up an offensive point. Fellow junior Mitch Mueller followed suit and showed tough defensive skills by edging his opponent Justin Morrill, 8-4.
Cyclone sophomore Jon Reader started his second season in the 165-pound in good fashion by defeating Utah Valley's Jeb Clark, 5-3. Redshirt freshman Jerome Ward made his debut for the Cyclones and came away with a 3-2 decision against Utah Valley's Casen Eldredge. David Zabriskie, the Cyclone heavyweight, received a forfeit.

The 6th Annual Burlington Bees/Friends of Community Field Winter Banquet will be held on Friday, January 16th in the PZAZZ! Convention and Events Center. This year's event will feature former pitching great Lee Smith as the keynote speaker.
Smith is considered one of the most dominant closers in baseball history. He held the major league record for most career saves from 1993 until 2006. Smith was drafted by the Cubs in the second round of the 1975 Major League Baseball Draft out of Shreveport, Louisiana, and made his major league debut in 1980. He would end up playing eight seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the Red Sox in 1988. Smith would go on to play for a total of eight different teams in his 18-year career. He was named to seven all-star games and finished in the top 10 in Cy Young voting four times. Since his retirement in 1997, Smith has worked as the roving pitching instructor in the Giants minor league system.
The Winter Banquet will also include an exciting line of autographed memorabilia and collectible items that can be purchased through auctions or won through a raffle.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $50 each or $350 for a table of eight.
The festivities start with a cocktail hour and the opening of the silent auction at 6:00. A full dinner of prime rib, chicken, potatoes, and vegetables will be served buffet-style starting at 7:00. Smith will not only address those in attendance, but leave time for a question and answer session as well. The evening will be wrapped up at approximately 9:00 after the conclusion of the live auction. For more information or tickets, please contact the Bees at (319) 754-5705.
The Kansas City Royals recently announced that Brian Rupp will return for his second season as manger of the Burlington Bees. Rupp led the Bees to a 73-65 regular season record and their first Midwest League Championship since 1999.
The 2009 campaign will be Rupp's sixth season in the Royals organization and ninth as a minor league manager.
The Bees will have a new pitching coach and hitting coach in 2009. Jerry Nyman will join the staff as the pitching coach after spending two years in Idaho Falls. Rupp and Nyman previously worked together in 2007 in Idaho Falls. This season will mark Nyman's 22nd year as a professional coach.
Pookie Wilson returns to the Royals organization as the hitting coach for the Bees. Wilson previously worked as a hitting coach in the Kansas City system from 2002-2004, including one year under Brian Rupp in Idaho Falls in 2004. Ryan Long, who was the Bees hitting coach the past two seasons, recently accepted a hitting coach position within the Pirates organization.

The Iowa Wesleyan College women's basketball team opened it up in the final 15 minutes to grab a 69-45 win over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College in their season opener Tuesday night at Ruble Arena.

The Tigers put away the Trojans with a 28-5 run in the second half, fighting off some cold shooting to win their season opener for the fourth straight year. Hannibal-LaGrange dropped to 0-4 on the season.

IWC never trailed in the game but the lead was anything but comfortable for the Tigers until the final 12 minutes. The scrappy visitors, with just eight players in uniform, hung with the Tigers through the first half, trailing just 30-23 at halftime as both teams shot below 26% in the first 20 minutes.

Hannibal-LaGrange crept even closer early in the second half, whittling the lead down to two points at 33-31 after two free throws by Abby Rankin with 15:27 left. The Tigers heated up over the next eight minutes, though, hitting nine of their next 15 shots, including back-to-back three-pointers by Brittney Wilson (Sr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

IWC also took advantage of foul trouble and the Trojans' lack of depth as the second half went on. The Tigers led by as many as 27 points in the final minute of the game.

Sherry Zehner (Jr.-St. Louis, Mo.) led IWC with 11 points off the bench.
Brittany Okland (Sr.-Kelley, Iowa) added 10 points and Heather Larson (Jr.-Canton, Ill.) had nine.
Anna Jones (Fr.-Cornell, Ill.) led the Tigers in rebounds (eight) and assists (six) and added six points.
Thirteen different Wesleyan players played and twelve players scored.

The Tigers shot 22 of 68 (32.4%) for the game, but held a 56-48 rebound advantage.
Hannibal-LaGrange shot 13 of 61 (21.3%), including just 6-for-32 in the second half (18.8%).

Iowa Wesleyan now gets ready for the Concordia University Cattle Classic this weekend in Seward, Neb. Coming off of a third straight 20-win season in 2007-08, the Iowa Wesleyan College women's basketball program is certainly scheduling like a team that wants to be among the best in the country.
The Tigers are tackling an ambitious early season slate that begins tonight with the team's opener against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College at 7 pm at Ruble Arena.

After facing the Trojans, IWC will play seven of its next eight games on the road, including four of its next five against teams ranked in the NAIA national poll.
The Tigers will play the top-rated team in the NAIA Division II preseason top 25 coaches' poll, Morningside College, and also have a game against the #7 team (Concordia University of Nebraska) and two games against the eleventh- ranked team (Sterling College of Kansas). There's also a game against Tabor (Kan.) College, a team that, like IWC, received votes in the preseason coaches' poll.
In all, the Tigers will play 11 of their first 14 games away from home, with few games resembling anything close to a light touch.
The schedule will let the Tigers find out a lot about themselves in a short amount of time.

Fifth year Head Coach Steve Williamson has another talented team this season, and the goal for the Tigers is to win the Midwest Collegiate Conference and get back to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, something the team was unable to do last year after making the national tourney the two previous years.

Three starters return from last year's squad that finished 20-9 overall, 12-4 in the MCC regular season. IWC made a run in the conference tournament, getting to the championship game before losing a tough 63-60 decision to St. Ambrose University.

The starters, guards Rachel Mitchell (Sr.-Des Moines, Iowa) and Ali DeVries (Jr.-Bellevue, Iowa) and forward Brittany Okland (Sr.-Kelley, Iowa), have been part of the core of the Tigers for the past two seasons. There is little doubt that they will be counted on every bit as much and more this season on a team that will have to blend eight newcomers with seven returnees.

Mitchell and DeVries both were named First Team All-MCC last year. Mitchell is the point guard who makes the Tigers go, whether it be with a rebound, an assist on the fast break, or by blowing past defenders to get to the basket.
"Rachel is probably one of the best, if not the best, point guards in the league," Williamson said. "She gets us going, we feed off the energy she creates. (And) she does a lot of little things the stats don't always show."

DeVries is the Tigers' best shooter and led the MCC and ranked among the national leaders in three-point field goals made last season with 81. She also shot 44.8% from three-point land, made 89.4% of her free throws, and led the team with 14.9 points a game while also rarely coming off the court (33.2 minutes per game).
"She's extremely competitive and a good leader," Williamson said. "Both her and Rachel are our captains. Ali can shoot the ball, she's a great defender-the best defender we have. Just an outstanding kid."

Okland will be the returning anchor of the IWC frontcourt. The 6-1 post player averaged 8.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last year and also blocked nearly two shots per game. With honorable mention all-conference forward Brooke Newton completing her eligibility and now a student assistant with the team, Okland is the leading returning rebounder on the roster. Williamson said that she has the potential to be one of the best post players he has ever coached but needs to play with more confidence.

Two other returnees who were among the first players off the bench last year are seniors Jennie Mitchell (LaGrange, Ga.) and Brittney Wilson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Both played in all 29 games last year. The 5-11 Mitchell can swing between the backcourt and front court and averaged 5.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, while the 5-9 Wilson averaged 3.0 points per game and can play anywhere in the backcourt.

Two other returnees who will also see action are guards Kelli Garrison (Sr.-Johnson, Kan.) and Brittany Janz (So.-Toncia, Ill.).
Garrison has played as a back-up point guard the past two years, while Janz is a good athlete who averaged just over a point a game in 17 games last year.

The list of newcomers is led by mostly junior college players, many who should see time in the rotation. Leading the way are 5-7 Megan Couch (Jr.-Mooresville, Ind.) and 5-10 Heather Larson (Jr.-Canton, Ill.), a pair of guards.
Couch comes to IWC from Danville (Ill.) Area Community College, where she led the Jaguars in scoring last year and set a school career record in three-pointers.
Larson joins the Tigers after being a two-time NJCAA All-American at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Ill.

Other junior college transfers include 5-11 Angela Brinkmeyer (Jr.-Hubbard, Iowa), 6-0 Sherry Zehner (Jr.-St. Louis, Mo.) and 5-6 guard Jessica Young (Jr.-Mount Vernon, Ill.).
Brinkmeyer and Zehner both will add punch to the frontcourt, while Young is actually no stranger to the IWC program. She was a member of the 2005-06 IWC team that won MCC regular season and tournament championships, playing in every game that season as a freshman. She rejoins the Tigers after two years at junior colleges.

Junior Erin Karlsgodt (Brainerd, Minn.) also joins the team this year after sitting out last season with knee problems. She transferred to IWC two years ago from Central Lakes (Minn.) College, where she averaged more than 10 points and eight rebounds per game in both seasons there.

Rounding out the roster are freshman guards Anna Jones (Cornell, Ill.) and Susie Francescon (Moline, Ill.).
Jones was named first team all-state in Illinois last year and led Flanagan-Woodland High School to the Class 1A championship by scoring a state title game-record 39 points.
Francescon played at Moline High School in the Quad Cities and was honorable mention all-state in Illinois.
Williamson said both players should also see minutes this season in their first year.

Williamson said the team's depth should be a positive this season, especially in the backcourt. "We feel we can play 9-10 girls easily," he said. "Our guards are our strength, we have 'ones', 'twos', 'threes' and 'fours' who all can shoot well from the perimeter and can put the ball on the floor. We also don't lose a lot off the bench."
Unlike last year, IWC does not have the weight of a national ranking going into the season. Last year Wesleyan was ranked 18th in the national preseason poll, but this year the Tigers finished four spots outside the top 25. The Tigers are picked to finish second in the MCC this season in a preseason poll of league coaches. St. Ambrose was again tabbed as the league favorite.
"The conference is extremely tough, and this should be one of the most balanced years and the toughest it's been since I've been here," Williamson said. "Grand View is extremely big and talented, St. Ambrose is the returning champs and has people back. It would not surprise me if any of the top four or five teams could finish at the top."

Pella and mother nature stopped the high powered Mt. Pleasant offense in the quarter final playoff football game Friday night in Pella by a score of 19-5. High winds, snow flurries and temperatures in the low 30's made for a miserable night to play football out doors, especially if you have an offense that relies on passing, and running backs that like to cut on a dime. Then there is the Pella defensive line that is big, quick and strong, they were just as disruptive to the Panther offensive effort that was held to 85 yards, 26 passing and 59 rushing. The Little Dutch go to the UNI Dome to play in the semi finals November 17th at 7:30 p.m. against Decorah who defeated Cresco 21-7 in their quarter final match up.
Mt. Pleasant had a very successful year ending up 11-1 overall and were District Five Champions. 23 seniors will graduate off this years team.

The 11-0 Mt. Pleasant Panthers play at the 11-0 Pella little Dutch tonight in the 3A quarter final play off football. Both teams can run the ball, both teams can pass the ball. Weather conditions may well come into play if the winds whip around like they are forecast to do. Kicking games and field position always play big on a windy night. If you look at these two teams on paper and try a pick a winner, it might be helpful to know who will have the ball last, as this game might boil down to that factor. The winner goes to the dome to play the winner of the Decorah vs Cresco Crestwood game in the semi finals Monday November 17th at 7:30 p.m.
