The weather can be blamed for a fatal accident that occurred in Henry County Monday afternoon. David Harris of Canton, Missouri was killed in the multi-vehicle accident on Highway 218 north of Mt. Pleasant. Harris was driving south on 218 when he lost control on the snow covered road. His vehicle crossed the median into the northbound lanes colliding with two other vehicles. One driver, Karla Scheker of Olds was take to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Juvenal Avendano-Sanchez of Columbus Junction was driving the third vehicle but was uninjured. A semi that was northbound ended up in the median where it hit a sign post when the driver attempted to avoid the collision.
Later on at about 6:30 pm a car went into the ditch on 218 near Crawfordsville north of the bridge construction site. Renee Jones of Williamsburg was driving the vehicle. She refused medical attention but when the Crawfordsville fire department arrived on the scene they requested an ambulance be sent. One person was taken to the Washington County Hospital. No other details are available until the Iowa State Patrol files its report.
At about 9:20 last night a second accident occurred near the bridge construction site on Hwy 218 south of Crawfordsville. Tamara Hammes of Fairfield lost control of the mini van she was driving. The van hit a construction barricade but no injuries were reported.
