EXTENSION YOUTH STEM ACADEMY RETURNS THIS SUMMER

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach of Lee County will host a STEM Academy workshop series for the second year. The STEM Academy offers four age-specific opportunities this summer for hands-on learning for youth focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Topics include biotechnology, energy, life science, cooking, and more.

“Biotech” will be offered for youth who have completed fourth through sixth grade. Youth will experience biotechnology first-hand and extract their own DNA. STEM Academy: BioTech will be held from 9am to 3pm on June 9th at the Youth Learning Center at the Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson. The cost for this STEM Academy is $35.

“Full of Energy” is a another program for youth who have completed fourth through sixth grade. Youth will explore energy as they harness the wind and cook with solar power. STEM Academy: Full of Energy will be held from 9am to 3pm on June 11th at the Youth Learning Center at the Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson. The cost for this STEM Academy is $35.

“Scales and Tails” is for youth who have completed kindergarten through 3rd grade. Participants will examine and learn about aquatic and reptilian life. STEM Academy: Scales and Tails will be held from 9am to 3pm on June 16 at the Youth Learning Center at the Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson. The cost for this STEM Academy is $25.

“The Science of Cooking” will be offered for youth who have completed kindergarten through 3rd grade. Youth will explore in the kitchen, conduct food experiments, and even explode some marshmallows! STEM Academy: Science of Cooking will be held from 9am to 3pm on June 18 at the Youth Learning Center at the Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson. The cost for this STEM Academy is $25.

Pre-registration is required, deadline is one week prior to the camp. Workshops will also be offered in Henry, Des Moines, and Louisa counties as well.
