Emma Jane Bradfield, 95, of rural Batavia, formerly of Stockport died at 6:45 A.M. Thursday August 27, 2015 at Parkview Care Center, Fairfield. She was born May 28, 1920 in Stockport to Aura D. and Bonnie L. McKee Nixon and married Vergil Bradfield February 16, 1941 in Milan, MI they were married for 741/2 years. He died July 29, 2015.
Emma Jane grew up in Stockport and graduated from Stockport High School. The Bradfields farmed near Stockport, retired to town in 1974 and moved to the Batavia community in 2011 to be near their daughter. She was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Stockport and Stockport Chapter 544 Order of the Eastern Star. During WWII Emma Jane supported her husband’s war effort by working at the Ordnance Plant in Middletown, later worked as a substitute at the Stockport Post Office and actively helped her husband on the farm. In the 1950’s she was a major contributor to running Bradfield Grocery in Stockport. She enjoyed gardening, reading, was an avid sewer, and spent several years wintering in Texas and traveling with Travco Trailer Group. She was a quiet person who was always at her husband’s side.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Miller (David) of Batavia, four grandchildren, Penny Morgan, Paul Miller (Kristin), Stephen Miller (Heather) and Seth Miller (Diana), 12 great-grandchildren and a sister, Beth Hudson of Rock Island, IL. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Webb and Fred Nixon, a sister, Telma Edwards and twin infant siblings at birth.
In accord with her wishes her body has been cremated. A graveside service for Emma Jane and Vergil will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday September 20, 2015 at Spencer Cemetery, Stockport. Military rites for Vergil by Elvin E Cecil Post No. 147, American Legion, Stockport. Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the cemetery or mailed to the family at 1988 Dewberry Avenue, Batavia, IA 52533. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua are in charge of arrangements.
