Elmer Louth

Elmer Louth, 97, formerly of Birmingham died at 8:30 A.M. Saturday December 26, 2015 at Pleasant Manor Care Center, Mt. Pleasant where he had resided since August 2015. He was born March 19, 1918 on the family farm northeast of Libertyville to Harvey and Isabelle Wilson Louth, graduated from Batavia High School and married Florence Ruth Anderson March 20, 1942 in Kahoka, MO They lived in Birmingham until moving Sunnybrook Assisted Living, Fairfield in 2006. Florence passed away December 31, 2014.

Elmer was employed at Fairfield Water Works, Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, Burlington and retired from ANR, formerly Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline, Birmingham after 30 years of service.

The Louths were active members of Birmingham United Methodist Church and served on various boards and committees.

Freemasonry was an important part of Elmer’s life. He became a Master Mason in Clinton Lodge No. 15, Fairfield in 1946 and he served as Worshipful Master in 1951 and again in 1993. He was also a District Lecturer and served the Grand Lodge of Iowa, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons as Grand Tyler in 1983 and as Senior Grand Warden in 1988. He received his 50 year certificate in 1996. He was also a member or York Rite Masonic Bodies in Ottumwa, Davenport Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons where he was Knight Commander Court of Honor, was a member of Cedar Falls Chapter No. 78, Order of Eastern Star and Wapello White Shrine, Ottumwa of which he was Past Watchman of the Shepherds.

He had served on Birmingham City Council and School Board and was active in Birmingham Lions Club.

He had played the part of the Apostle Philip in the Van Buren County Ministerial Association’s Last Supper presentation for 24 years. Elmer was an avid gardener, fisherman and mushroom hunter and most of all loved being with family, hosting family events and enjoying his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Remaining to cherish his memory are four children, Linda (Bill) Gerdes of Washington, Ruth Louth of Mt. Pleasant, Terri (Greg) Grover of Cedar Falls and Wilson (Laurie) Louth of Dickson, TN, eight grandchildren, Erica (Grant) Venema, David Powell, Rachel Grover, Lauren (Kenny) McCullum, Willie, Jordan, Hannah and Payton Louth, three step-grandchildren, Lori Hitchcock, Randy Powell and Rob Gerdes, seven great-grandchildren, seven step-great grandchildren, a step great-great granddaughter, a brother, Roy Louth of San Diego, CA, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Erma Jeffrey, Mildred Babcock and Betty Lawson.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday December 30, 2015 in Birmingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Herb Shafer and Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Visitation will open at 4 P.M. Tuesday at the church with family present 5-7 P.M. Masonic services by Clinton Lodge will follow the visitation and all are welcome to the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield. Memorials to Birmingham United Methodist Church may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 800 South 14th Avenue, Washington, IA 52353. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua is assisting the family.
