Dorothy Pollock

Dorothy Pollock, 91, of Ames, formerly of Douds, died at 6:53 A.M. Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Northcrest Heartwood House, Ames. She was born March 6, 1923 in Douds to Stanley A. and Bertha Dorothy Barker and married Davis E. Pollock July 7, 1940 at her parents’ home in Douds. Dorothy graduated from Douds High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1940. She and Dave moved to Washington D.C. after their marriage, where he was employed by the U.S. War Department for a year. They returned to Douds in 1942 and became associated with Barker Mercantile. Dave and Dorothy later purchased the store, which they operated until retirement. Dorothy also served as Douds School secretary for 22 years.

The Pollocks were active in everything that was good for Douds. She was active all her life in the Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, served on the church board and various committees and was treasurer of United Methodist Women for 20 years. Her church work began in the former Douds church, now Christ United Methodist. She and Dave were among those who worked to build the present church building.

Dorothy was a 50+ year member and Past Matron of Twin City Chapter 258, Order of Eastern Star, was active in the Republican Party and had been a Scout leader. She was an avid reader and loved playing bridge.

She and Dave truly enjoyed seeing their children, Davis A., Margy and Carol graduate from college and become contributing adults to society. Dave and Dorothy had travelled to New Zealand, Hawaii, several European countries and Morocco as well as throughout the United States, but always looked forward to returning home to Douds.

Surviving are two daughters, Margy Howarth (Dean) of Ames and Carol Pollock of San Diego, CA, a daughter-in-law, Marcia Pollock of Madison, WI, four grandchildren, Eric Pollock (Eve), Kirsten Pollock, Kelley León Howarth (Neyo) and Bradley Howarth (Dave Bastien), three great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her son, Davis A. and a sister, Anna Margaret Morrison.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday January 31, 2015 at Christ United Methodist Church, Douds, Rev. Mark Young and Rev. Robert G. Farr officiating. Visitation will open at 3 P.M. Friday January 30 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds with family present from 5-7 P.M. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, East of Douds. Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church or Twin City Chapter, O.E.S. may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 2852 North 500th Avenue, Ames, IA 50014.
