Donald Stagers

Donald Dean Stagers, 86, of Bartonville, formerly of Douds, passed away at 10:45 am on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Unity Point Health-Methodist. 

He was born on July 20, 1929 in Douds, IA the son of Jay and Fern Connor Stagers. He married Eleanor L. (Grubb) Andrews on February 13, 1971 in Peoria.

Surviving are his wife, and two children Randy Stagers and Debby Stagers. He is also survived by two stepchildren Larry Andrews and Jay (Linda) Andrews Webb of Las Vegas, NV. One-step granddaughter Janet Webb further survives him.

Dean faithfully and courageously served his country in the U.S. Army being honorably discharged in 1952. He was employed by Byerly Aviation for 36 years. During his employment with Byerly, he developed and taught aviation fueling classes throughout the United States. He retired from Byerly in 2005 as a ground supervisor. After his retirement he worked part time driving the shuttle bus for Peoria Airport as well as driving cars for Bob Lindsay Honda in Peoria. 

Dean had many hobbies throughout his life including aviation, computers, camping with the RV and fishing. One of Dean’s many accomplishments was obtaining his private pilot certification in 1974, and the honor of flying the “Good Year” blimp in 1975 over Peoria. He was inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame on April 27, 2000 in Rock Island. He was a member of American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville, IL. 

Cremation rites have been accorded. A time to celebrate Dean’s life will be Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at the Bartonville American Legion, 4501 Airport Road in Bartonville. Burial of his remains will be at a later date in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery on Smithville Road in Bartonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Bartonville Fire Department may be sent to his wife at P.O. Box 4078, Bartonville, IL 61607.
