Citizens Help Find SuspectsWritten by Theresa Rose on May 30, 2017
Friday night area cell phone users hooked into the WENS alert system received notice that law enforcement was looking for two individuals who fled on foot after a high speed chase with Mt. Pleasant police. Both individuals were found thanks to citizen help. The chase started about 6 pm at Mapleleaf and Harvey when the police tried to make a traffic stop. The vehicle crashed into a ditch on 280th street south of Mt. Pleasant. The occupants fled and that’s when the Wireless Emergency Notification system message was sent out by Henry County dispatch advising the public in the area to be on the lookout for the two individuals. Thanks to a citizen call at about 9 pm, one of the suspects was seen walking on Kentucky Ave West of Lexington. A short time later Vazhon Durant was picked up. He was questioned at the police department and released without charges. On Saturday morning another citizen called in after spotting a subject walking along River Road. Derek Lankford was located and taken to the Henry County Jail. He was charged with possession to deliver meth, eluding and fourteen additional traffic offenses.
