Today is River Valley Coop Day at the Des Moines County Fair. Activities throughout the day include the 8 am 4H/FFA Goat Show in the Livestock Arena, the 8 am 5K Color Run, the 12:30 pm Chainsaw Carving Demonstrations, 1 pm Garden Tractor Pull, the 1:30 pm Pigeon Demonstration in Fritz Hall, a 1:30 pm 4H/FFA Cat Show and Small Pet Show in the Exhibit Hall, the 4:30 Ice Cream Contest Judging at the Activity Tent, and the 7 pm Music Express on the Free Stage. Today is Kid's Day at the Van Buren County Fair. Events today include the 9 am Baby Contest, Free Kids Games from 10 am to 2 pm, the 11 am Water Relays, 12 pm Mud Volleyball, 1 pm Magic Show, 2 pm Horse Pull, 3 pm Kids Pedal Pull, 4 pm Weird Science Show, and the 6:30 pm Hypnosis Show. The Dover Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm through October. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. The museum is air conditioned and handicap accessible.
The Milton Christian Church is having a free community cookout at Milton Park tonight at 6 pm! There will be hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, and live music!
The ninth summer concert of the Burlington Municipal Band will be conducted by West Burlington Elementary School general music teacher Jeremy Henman. Jeremy's selections range from classics to Warner Brothers cartoon music and should be entertaining for audience members of all ages. The free concert will be Sunday July 28, 7:30 PM at the Crapo Park band shell. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket or sit on provided benches.
Players Workshop will hold auditions for Neil Simon’s comedy 'The Prisoner of Second Avenue' today and tomorrow at 7 pm at the Players Workshop, 1431 Grove St., Burlington. Parts are available for two men and four women, all in the 40-50 age range. No preparation or experience is necessary, but a serious time commitment is required. The show is slated for performance on Sept. 27-29 and Oct. 3-6 at the Workshop. Anyone interested in auditioning, volunteering backstage, or simply wanting more information should contact director Matt Poling at 750-0334.
