The Nonprofit Management Academy will hold a course on Board Development for Nonprofits on Tuesday, July 12 in Keokuk, Iowa. Louis Riggs, J.D. Hannibal-LaGrange University, Assistant Professor of English and Chair of the Missouri Humanities Council and John Gulick, University of Missouri Extension Community Development Specialist and former Chair of Missouri Community Betterment, Inc. will be teaching the day long course. Between them, Gulick and Riggs bring more than 50 years of Board involvement at every level, including chairing statewide organizations.
This six-hour course will cover a range of topics critical for nonprofit organization board members. Through interactive discussion the following topics will be covered:
- How to handle “challenging” board members (Debbie Downer, Dr. No, Young Man in a Hurry, etc).
- Recruiting new board members
- Orientation for your board members
- Using Structure (bylaws, committees) to make your board more effective
- Board/staff roles and responsibilities (Are we ready for a staff person?)
- Your board members and fundraising
- Annual evaluation/self-assessment of board members
- Transitioning your past board members into other leadership roles
Participants can partake in one or all of the remaining sessions offered on the second Tuesday of the month through April 2017 (excluding December). We welcome anyone seeking professional development in the area of nonprofit management, including staff, management, volunteers, professional association employees, educators, and private sector employees who wish to make a career change to the nonprofit sector.
All sessions will be located at the Baymont Inn & Suites, 325 Main Street in Keokuk, Iowa. Classes will be from 9 am – 4 pm with a one-hour lunch break on your own.
