Bernard Clement ”Ben” Steffensmeier, 53 years, of St. Paul, Iowa died at 1:03 am Sunday, May 24, 2015 at The Madison, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born April 7, 1962 at Fort Madison, Iowa, a son of Ernest F. “Ernie” and Clotilda “Tillie” (Kruse) Steffensmeier. On March 20, 1993 at West Point, Iowa he married Jennifer “Jenny” Haeger. She survives.
Ben lived in the area all his life. He was a 1980 graduate of Fort Madison High School. He was a member of St. James the Less Church, St. Paul, Iowa. In February of 1982 he established and operated Steffensmeier Welding and Manufacturing, Pilot Grove, Iowa. This was his passion. He also liked to play cards, raise chickens and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He especially loved spending time with his wife and kids, family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer “Jenny” Steffensmeier, of Fort Madison, Iowa; his mother, Clotilda “Tillie” Steffensmeier, of Houghton, Iowa; three sons: Isaac Steffensmeier, Aaron Steffensmeier, and Nathan Steffensmeier; two daughters, Rachel Steffensmeier and Sarah Steffensmeier; seven brothers: Chris (Mary) Steffensmeier, of Salem, Iowa; Ernest Jr. (Annette) Steffensmeier, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Gordon (Kathy) Steffensmeier, of Corvallis, Oregon; Craig (Jeanine) Steffensmeier, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Glenn (Ann) Steffensmier, of Hillsboro, Iowa; Douglas (Diane) Steffensmeier, of West Point, Iowa; and Gary (Margaret) Steffensmeier, of Farmington, Iowa; four sisters: Deborah (Ron) Becker, of Wever, Iowa; Michelle (Ted) Wenke, of Douds, Iowa; Brenda (Dave) Meierotto, of West Point, Iowa; and Colleen (Todd) Holder, of Raleigh, North Carolina; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Melanie Steffensmeier, and one great niece, Adrianna Wanat.
A Rosary will be recited at 3:30 pm Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the St. James the Less Church, St. Paul, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:30 pm Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the church, where a Christian Vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the St. James the Less Church, St. Paul, Iowa, with Reverend Bruce DeRammelaere. Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Houghton, Iowa. A memorial has been established for the Fort Madison High School Industrial Technology Programs, contributions may be left at the church or the funeral home.
