Barbara Jeanne Hamberg, 81 of Keosauqua died Friday June 10, 2016 at home with her family at her side after a year and a half battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born May 8, 1935 to Ren and Wynona Davis Jack in Cantril and married Robert “Bob” Evans Hamberg February 15, 1959 at Keosauqua.
Barb graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1953 and worked as a bookkeeper at the Van Buren County Treasurers Office, Extension Office and retired from Sullivan Drug in 1997. After retirement, she worked part time at the Keosauqua City Clerk’s office. She was an active member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church, UMW and Ruth Circle, Order of the Eastern Star, past matron of OES in Cantril, secretary of the Van Buren Women’s Bowling Association, member of several bowling Leagues, Van Buren Cancer Society, Happy Day Express Pre-School board, past board member of Riverview Country Club and township trustee secretary. She helped organize little girls softball in Van Buren County and was the coach for the Cantril/Milton team. She enjoyed watching her family play baseball and basketball, bowling, preparing financial records/keeping books for the family farms, traveling, reading, the occasional trip to nearby casinos, and cooking/baking for her friends, family and those in need.
Remaining to celebrate her life and to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert, her children, Cecil Hamberg (Colleen) of Keosauqua, Jacalyn “Jackie” Luchsinger (Jeff) of Arvada, CO and Aaron Hamberg (Joy Padget) of Keosauqua, a grandson: Ryan Carl Hamberg of Keosauqua, 12 step-grandchildren: Scott Newlon (Heidi) of Kansas City, MO, Jody Newlon of New London, Jessica Cooper (Amy) of Austin, Texas, Chris Cooper (Megan) of Mt. Pleasant, Pat Cooper of Keosauqua, Ace, Eli, Jasmine, Georgia Padget all of Keosauqua and Brent, Ashley, and Heather Menefee, 11 great-grandchildren, a sister Shirley DeHart (Joe) of Keosauqua, two sisters-in-law, Frances Jack of Keosauqua, and Frances Drake Henry of Greeley, CO, many nieces and nephews, that refer to her as Auntie Barb (Jack/DeHart side of family) or Aunt Barbara (Hamberg/Drake side of family) and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, David and Bob Jack, a sister-in-law, Joyce Jack, two brothers-in-law, Bob Drake and Bob Henry, a daughter-in-law, Sheila Hamberg, a niece, Gina Jack, and two nephews, Kent and Norris Drake. Her wish is that everyone remembers her smile, her laugh, her positive attitude and willingness to help those in need, her love of travel and her love for her family, friends and her community.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday June 13, 2016 at Keosauqua United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart officiating. Visitation will open at 3 P.M. Sunday June 12, 2016 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present 4-6 P.M. Burial will be in Purdom Cemetery, Keosauqua. Memorials to Keosauqua United Methodist Church or to the Keosauqua Fire Department may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 203 Monroe Street, Keosauqua, Iowa 52565.
