Autopsy Complete in Washington County Officer Involved Shooting

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Iowa — On Monday, September 14, 2015, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on Martin Hammen. The result of the autopsy revealed Hammen died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

On Tuesday, September 15, 2015, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) interviewed Sgt. Kirk Bailey of the Washington County Sherriff’s Office. Sgt. Bailey was identified as the deputy that shot Hammen while responding to a report of a house fire located at 1149 Hwy 22, Wellman, Iowa. Hammen displayed a handgun and refused to comply with the deputies orders. Deputies report Hammen waived the handgun in a threatening manner in the direction of the deputies.

Sgt. Bailey is a twenty (20) year law enforcement veteran.

The DCI, along with the assistance of the Washington County Sherriff’s Office, continue to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. All information collected as part of this investigation will be forwarded to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. Any charging decisions will be determined by the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.
