Vearl Hatfield McCombs

Vearl Hatfield McCombs, 99, of Farmington passed away at 11:08 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at her daughter Karen Petty’s home.

 

She was born on June 19, 1920, at Downing, Missouri, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Paris) Hatfield.  In August 1937 she married Marvin E. Coop, they later divorced.  In May 1969 Vearl married Ernest McCombs, he proceeded her in death January 27, 2000.

 

Survivors include her two daughters: Karen (David) McCombs Petty of Farmington, Iowa, Judith Coop Grabowski of Farmington, Iowa; a step-son: Fritz McCombs; five grandchildren: Daniel Petty of Janesville, Wisconsin, Emily Petty of Hiawatha, Iowa, Colonel R.L. (Barb) Grabowski of Fort Madison, Iowa; Vickey (Stephen Lee) Grabowski of Kansas City, Missouri; RoxAnn (Walter) Raisner of Glen Carbon, Illinois; six great grandchildren: Adam Grabowski, Alexandra Grabowski, Joseph Grabowski, Banning (Jamie) Grabowski, Bree Ann Lee, Gillen Ann Raisner;  three great-great grandchildren: Carter Grabowski,  Khole Lee, Karli Ladd. Also surviving are her special neighbor: and caregiver; Rayma Peterman; great nephew: Joe Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son-in-law: Harry; brothers: Ray, Gale, Edgar, and Carl; sisters: Blanche, Leota, Maxine, Letha, and Bessie.

 

Vearl was an avid quilter and gardener. She enjoyed flowers, fishing, camping, and family gatherings. She especially loved her family and was very proud of her Hatfield Heritage.

 

Per her wishes body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

 

There will be no services. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Croton Cemetery.

 

Memorials have been established in her memory for the Croton Cemetery or the Farmington EMT’s.

Area Youth Selected for Washington D.C. Trip

Congratulations to Hayley Chase of Danville and Layne Kiefer of Crawfordsville, winners of the Access Energy Cooperative 2020 Youth Tour Contest. This event is an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 18-24, sponsored by Access Energy Cooperative.

Hayley and Layne will join approximately 40 other Iowa students and nearly 1,000 students from across the country who have been selected by their electric cooperative to attend the annual Youth Tour.

Hayley is a sophomore at Danville Community High School and participates in large group speech, softball, choir and band. She volunteers on missions trips, LEO Club, and works at the Danville Care Center and Scooters.

A junior at WACO High School, Layne is the son of Robin and Tim Kiefer. He is active in Student Council, National Honor Society, orchestra and band. He is also involved in Joe Biden’s Presidential campaign, 4-H, Empower, and worked for Pizza Hut.

While on tour, Hayley and Layne will learn about American history and government. They will visit historical sights including monuments, museums, the U.S. Capitol, federal agencies and other points of interest. They will also have an opportunity to meet with their legislators in the House and Senate.

Access Energy Cooperative has been a part of the Youth Tour program for more than 50 years and currently selects two students each year to participate in the five-day trip. The students are selected through an application and interview process.

Henry County residents offered Call Center, Respiratory Center

Henry County Health Center has partnered regionally with Great River Health on a 24-hour public call center to provide answers to questions about COVID-19 and direct callers to area resources. The telephone number is 800-871-3313. Great River Health established this call center to support the medical needs of the region. HCHC is pleased to partner with Great River Health and Fort Madison Community Hospital to provide healthcare for those impacted by COVID-19 in Southeast Iowa.

The call center is staffed by registered nurses who can answer questions about respiratory symptoms and potential exposure to the illness.

In Henry County, callers who have a cough or difficulty breathing and a fever may be referred to the Henry County Respiratory Center Clinic, 407 S. White Street, Mt. Pleasant. The phone number is 319-385-5379 and appointments are required in order to be seen. This is a collaborative effort by the medical community of Henry County. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 am. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

 

Patients with symptoms that are mild are encouraged to remain at home and self-quarantine for at least seven days or until they are fever-free without medication and have no symptoms for three days.

First COVID-19 Death Confirmed in Iowa

DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) learned late today of the first death associated with novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The individual was an older adult, 61-80 years of age, and a resident of Dubuque County.

“Our hearts are heavy with the first loss of an Iowan to COVID-19. The thoughts and prayers of our state are with the family during this difficult time,” said Gov. Reynolds. “I continue to urge all Iowans to protect their health and the health of others, especially older individuals and those with chronic health conditions who are most at risk. We all have a role to play in limiting the spread of this virus.”

James Ernest Koller

James Ernest Koller, 73, of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at his home.

 

He was born on December 16, 1946 the son of  Floyd and Mable (Denney) Koller. On November 28, 1970, he married Mary Jo Menke at St. James Church in St. Paul, Iowa. Jim and Mary Jo were happily married for 49 years.

 

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tina (Brian) Conner, Tonya (Jonathan) Hasleiet; two sons: Jimmie (Lauren Switzer) Koller and Daniel (Argelia) Koller; eleven grandchildren: Kelsi (Keaton), Payton, Tyler, Cameron, Jeron (JJ), Taylor, Avery, Lydia, Khanon, Grayson, and Joseph; great grandchild: Baby Loveall expected in April 2020; one brother: Robert (Patty) Koller; one sister: Bette (Steve) Muerhoff; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Susie and Ernest Koller; his parents: Floyd and Mable Koller; and sister: Judy Schlicher.

 

Jim was a member of the Zion Mennonite Church. A graduate of Central Lee High School, he owned and operated Koller Trucking, Inc. and J&M Aglime, LLC. He loved his life’s work. Jim was an avid St. Louis Cardinal, Iowa State Cyclone, and University of Iowa Hawkeye fan. Jim enjoyed watching his kids and grandchildren’s sporting events. His family was his pride in life, he never knew a stranger and truly treated everyone around him like family.

 

Due to the restrictions for public gathering caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, a memorial service for James will be held at future date. A private family burial will take place at the Mennonite Cemetery, Donnellson, Iowa. A memorial has been established in his memory for the Zion Mennonite Cemetery, Fort Madison Community Hospital Home Health and Hospice, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  Memorials can be mailed to the family at P.O. Box 95, Donnellson, Iowa 52625.

MP Water Shut-off

The Mt. Pleasant Municipal Utilities will have a water shut-off on Wednesday, March 25th, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. to tie-in to the new water main that was installed last week under the Lincoln Street Railroad Crossing. This shut-off will affect the following locations:

 

N. Lincoln St. from Railroad Crossing to Henry St.
E. Henry St. from Lincoln St. to Hamlin St.
E. Vernon St. from Lincoln St. to Poplar St.
Poplar St. from Vernon St. to Henry St.
