Made available each year by the Iowa General Assembly, a transit system can apply to have up to 80 percent of their project funded through this program. To qualify, a transit system must secure local funding for a minimum of 20 percent of the project costs.

These six projects were approved by the Commission.

City Considers Use of Speed Cameras

The Mount Pleasant City Council Ordinance committee has approved an ordinance for recommendation to the full council that will regulate the use of speed cameras. Tuesday morning the committee went thru the proposed ordinance with the Mount Pleasant Police Chief Lyle Murray who said the purpose is to cut down on speeding and increase safety.  The equipment would be purchased from a company that would not only provide training but would also send out the tickets and collect the fines. The general public will have a chance to ask questions and share thoughts during any one of three readings. The readings will be held at the next three full council meetings. The contract for the equipment will be available at the third meeting the last week of October if the third and final reading is passed.

Healthy Halloween Walk Cancelled This Year

Henry County Public Health will not be holding their annual Healthy Halloween Walk this year due to rising COVID-19 cases and concerns for unvaccinated children. This free, family-friendly event has been held each October at East Lake Park since 2013. In 2020 a no-contact event was planned but cancelled due to bad weather and rising COVID-19 cases. “We had hoped to use all of the no-contact plans and increased safety measures we had ready for last year at this year’s event, but the difference this year is that children are getting sick from the delta variant,” states Kelly Carr, Community Outreach Coordinator. “With only about half of our residents vaccinated, we just couldn’t put on an event that could put those kids at risk.”

Public Health urges all eligible residents to get vaccinated. All authorized COVID-19 vaccines provide strong protection against serious illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19. Protecting yourself protects those around you, such as people at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. It also protects those who can’t get vaccinated, including infants, young children, or people with immune systems weakened by things like chemotherapy for cancer. Henry County Public Health offers the Moderna and J&J vaccine on a walk-in basis Monday – Friday 8am-3:30pm at their office at 106 N. Jackson St., Mt. Pleasant. There is no cost and no insurance needed. COVID-19 at-home test kits are also available by appointment only. Call 319-385-0779 if you have any questions about the vaccine or would like to request a test kit. Visit HealthyHenryCounty.org/covid for more guidance and information about COVID-19.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Investigation Of Human Remains Found in Lee County

On September 5, 2021 at approximately 10:16 AM, law enforcement agencies (West Point Police Department (WPPD), Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI)) were contacted by a property owner who located human remains on their rural West Point property, in the area of 110th Street, West Point, IA.  A search was conducted and no other human remains were located.

On September 8, 2021 an additional search was conducted by the West Point Fire Department, WPPD, LCSO, DCI and members of a K-9 search and rescue organization. No other human remains were located during the search and additional searches were scheduled.

On September 11, 2021 the property owner conducted a large scale brush clearing operation of the property to assist law enforcement with the search for additional human remains.

On September 12, 2021 at approximately 8:25 AM, the property owner located additional human remains and members of the WPPD, LCSO, DCI and Lee County Medical Examiner Investigator responded and conducted an investigation.  During the scene examination there were personal items discovered at the scene which will assist in the identification, however the final identification will have to be made using DNA analysis.  The human remains were transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, examination and identification.  Once a positive identification can be accomplished through DNA analysis, law enforcement will conduct family notifications.

There did not appear to be any signs of foul play related to the investigation and there are no apparent threats or dangers to the general public related to the incident.
