Brighton Whoopee Days Ready to Blast Back in TimeWritten by Theresa Rose on June 9, 2016
Brighton Whoopee Days schedule offers some long-time favorites and adds some new events for Brighton residents and visitors to enjoy during the 106th Annual Whoopee Days set for June 16-19. The theme this year is ‘Brighton Back in Time’.
Events kick off on Thursday evening with the Brighton Lions Club concession stand opening and Whoopee Days bingo starting at 5 p.m. The fun continues at 6 p.m. with live music from Abe Miller, the Sweet Fun Carnival opening and karaoke at CaMander’s Bar & Grill. The 2016 Grand Marshals will be announced at 7 p.m. preceding the very popular Bill Riley Talent Show at 7:30 p.m.
Friday fun starts at 4 p.m. when the carnival and concession stand opens. At 5 p.m. bingo will take place in the Brighton Community Center, followed by the Lake Darling Saddle Club Fun Show at 6:30 p.m. at the Brighton Horse Arena.
The Des Moines-based dueling pianos group – Andy & Mike with the Dueling Piano Band – will entertain Whoopee Days crowds from 7-9 p.m. at the Brighton City Park Stage. Be sure to come with a favorite song or two to request and be prepared for a fun night of live music. Friday night will wrap up with a karaoke contest at CaMander’s.
The Whoopee Days fun flies into full swing at 7 a.m. Saturday with the annual Whoopee Walk and Brighton Lion’s Breakfast at the Brighton Community Center.
Tractor owners can bring their favorite machine out for a ride to Lake Darling during the Ding Darling Highway Tractor Ride. Tractors will line up at Terry’s Feed Service, drive to Lake Darling then turn around and be back to Brighton in time to participate in the annual parade which lines up at 9 a.m.
A vendor and craft show will begin at 9 a.m. as will tours of Christner’s 1920 gas station. Both events are open until 2 p.m.
Parade judges will be busy at 9:30 a.m. when they award prizes to the best floats in the 106th Annual Whoopee Days Parade. The parade which travels along Washington and Main streets will begin at 10 a.m. Be sure to bring a bag for the kids to catch lots of candy.
Following the parade, children can enjoy face painting by Judy Bloom, and the whole family can get lunch at the Brighton Lion’s Concession Stand located at the Brighton City Park Pavilion.
Other activities taking place downtown Brighton on Saturday are the Little Darling Cute Kids Contest at 11:15 a.m., Sweet Fun Carnival rides open at noon, Brighton Bear Reunion takes place from 1-2:30 p.m., Hawkeye Pedal Tractor Pull will be added this year and take place at 3 p.m. and the 3rd annual Best Darn Cook contest also starts at 3 p.m.
For those wanting to get a little mud on the tires, the annual Whoopee Days Mud Run will begin at 1 p.m at the Brighton Ball Park. Registration opens at 11:15 a.m. The Brighton Chamber will host its annual concession stand opening at 11:30 a.m. New for 2016, a mechanical bull will be on site for people to test their cowboy skills.
Saturday evening entertainment begins at 5 p.m. with the Whoopee Pie Eating Contest. All ages are welcome to compete for bragging rights.
“American Idol” contestant and Pleasant Plain native Michael Powers will take the stage from 5:30-7 p.m. Powers has opened for some of the biggest names in country music and will be making his Whoopee Days debut in 2016.
Get ready to laugh during Dan Ladd’s Comedy Hypnosis Show from 7-8 p.m. at the Brighton City Park Stage. All evening entertainment is free and open to the public. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.
Saturday night wraps up with the annual street dance featuring Kross Country at CaMander’s Bar & Grill from 8 p.m. to midnight.
The 106th Whoopee Days will conclude with its annual community church service in the park at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
